Setting Up Group Weights in eCourses (as opposed to points system)

Updated on

Canvas provides two methods to calculate grades.  Straight points (the default mode) and weighted groups.

STEP 1: SET UP GROUPS IN THE GRADES

  1. Click Assignments on the Course Menu
Gradebook Setup - Calculations: ITO - Essential + Reference and 2 more pages - School - Microsoft Edge
  1. Click +Group
  1. Enter Group Name
  2. Click Save

Repeat this process for as many groups as necessary.

Assignment groups can be used for either Points or Weighted Groups.  Students will see a group name in the grade book in either case.  For maximum clarity, it is best practice to name groups exactly as they are shown in the syllabus.

STEP 2: ASSIGN WEIGHTS

  1. Click the 3 vertical dots next to +Assignment
  2. Select Assignment Group Weights

  1. Check Weight final grade based on assignment groups

  1. Adjust weights to add up to 100% as indicated on your syllabus
  2. Click Save

Notice the % of Total indicators that show the grade book is setup with group weights.  If the weights exceed 100%, eCourses will re-scale back to 100%.  This is not an effective method to add bonus credit.

It is possible to set the total points above 100%.  Canvas interprets this as a percentage, so it will scale it back to 100% when applying the grading scheme.  This will not result in extra credit.  To apply extra credit refer to the Canvas Guide on Extra Credit.

Sections without assignments will not be used to calculate grades.  As shown above Imported Assignments, would equal 100% of the grade because there are no assignments in the Assignments group.
