This document applies to Spring 2026 for College of Business Only. We are rolling out a pilot of these Advanced Features before opening to the entire university.
It is strongly recommended to run a practice no-credit or minimal credit test quiz before deploying these new tools on major assignments even if students have already used Honorlock for the term.
Please direct students to Honorlock Support first before having them contact CIITS. Honorlock support provides 24/7 chat support. CIITS can not respond as quickly as often not even the same day due to staffing limitations. See Guide on Honorlock Support for More Details.
What are the Honorlock Advanced Features?
Tools in Honorlock beyond the basic web browser extension. They include:
- Enhanced Desktop Security: A more secure application called Enhanced desktop security (not an browser extension) that more effectively restricts access to the web and computer. It also authorized specific programs (like Excel) for use during an exam. Students will have to install the application - it does not require administrator access.
- Side Angle Webcam - this allows for a directly connected web cam to be set up to capture the keyboard area.
- Multiple webcams - this allows both a camera for the face and keyboard at the same time
- Mobile Device as side-camera - after installing a application on their phone students can use their phone as the side camera - this features will prevent use of the phone during the exam.
Students will be prompted to install the Enhanced Security Tool when they first use this feature.
Settings to Require Only the Side Camera, but Not Permit the Use of a Mobile Device as a Camera (This will not record the face)
Settings to Allow (Not Require use of Mobile Device as Side Camera -- Only Side Camera Will be Used Face will note be recorded)
Settings to Require both Facial and Side (Hands and Keyboard Camera)
Settings to Require Facial and Side Camera but not Allow use of Mobile Phone - Only a directly connected web cam
Scroll to the middle of the setup to Enable the Application
How do I access Advanced Features in Honorlock?
Add the Honorlock-Advanced Features Link to your menu. If you used Honorlock 1.3 LTI for other exams this term to review content if must remain active. You may wish to remove it from the menu while tests are active to reduce student confusion. To use advanced features the exams must be set up in the Advanced Features utility.
Step 1: Click on Settings
Step 2: Click on Navigation Tab
Step 3: Locate Honorlock Advanced Features in the bottom section (should be last item in the list)
Step 4: Click on 3 dots next to Honorlock Advanced Features and click Enable
Step 5: (Optional) Change position in upper section
Step 6: Click Save (will need to scroll down to see Save Option

Extension vs. Application
Honorlock offers two methods to secure exams. At this time the application is recommended

Side Camera & Multi- Camera Options.
A Side Camera only uses a camera that points at the student keyboard.
The multi-camera option allows requiring both the face camera and the side camera
When using the multi-camera option the side camera becomes the primary camera and the face camera only records once every 10 seconds.
CellPhone Camera For Side Camera
An option exists to allow students to use their phones as the side camera.
- Students must download the Honorlock Application (different from laptop/desktop application) on their phones prior to testing.
- The phone is positioned to capture the keyboard and hands of the student.
- Honorlock recommends a direct connection to the laptop. Not all cables transfer data reliably.
- In testing the web camera did not always connect consistently even with a strong wi-fi connection or a direct cable connection.
- Positioning a mobile phone to capture the keyboard is not simple.
- Even if the camera is not reliable and does not provide a feed, it will prevent the use of the phone during an exam.
Allow Mobile Device for Web Cam feature is limited to Android and iPhones. Tablets are not compatible with this feature.
