This guide is intended for Faculty using Honorlock for Proctoring.
Please do NOT share this guide with students. We have other guides for students.
Q. What does Honorlock do?
Honorlock is an full suite proctoring solution that records student video, audio, desktop activity, and web site traffic and includes a lock down browser (called BrowerGuard). These setting can be adjusted by faculty on a per exam basis.
It allows access listing a limited number of websites if desired.
Q. Does Honorlock work on iPads, Tablets and Smartphones?
No. It only works on Windows 10/11, MacOS 10.15 or newer or ChromeOS laptops and desktops.
It is not compatible with any smartphones or tablets.
Q. What web browsers is Honorlock compatible with?
Google Chrome 120+ exclusively
Q. My student doesn't have a compatible device, how can they use Honorlock?
On-campus students may check out a TechItOut Chromebook from any kiosk for several hours. They only work on the campus network. They will not work in the on-campus apartments.
The are located 2nd floor MSC, 2nd & 3rd floors Library, 2nd floor Ag/Business Building, 1st Floor Electrical Engineering and 1st floor Northwest Campus.
A limited number of machines in Library 210 (2nd Floor Computer Lab) will work when video is required. Have students ask for a Mac or a windows machine with a built in camera. If you disable the camera requirement, any machine in Library 210 will work.
Fully online remote students will need to borrow a device or may be able to setup arrangements at a proctoring center at a local school or proctoring center AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. These arrangements typically take several days if not weeks to setup.
Q. Students are getting Access Code requests, how do they work around this?
We have provided an interactive Guide to assist students who have trouble accessing Honorlock. Feel free to share with students.

There are 4 reasons students will see this screen
- They are using a browser other than Chrome or a version older than 120.
- They are trying to access it form unsupported hardware (smartphone/tablet or desktop/laptop without supported OS)
- They have conflicting extensions installed. Secure Exam Proctor, ProctorU, GotoMeeting cause conflicts, others may as well.
- In limited circumstances, if the student tries to access the exam from the Listings page in eCourses, calendar or the To Do list it will not properly execute. Have student go into the course click on Honorlock 1.3 from the Course Menu and launch the exam from there.

Avoid giving the Access code to any students. This will permit the student to bypass Honorlock. Students can easily share the access code with other students even if given to only 1 student. Ask them to go through troubleshooting steps and/or contact Honorlock support.
How do I get assistance from Honorlock?
Honorlock provides 24/7 chat support to students either via their support page or within the Honorlock tool (see image below)
Faculty can access chat or call 1 844 243-2500. Students can not call for support.
Email: [email protected]

Q. Can I get help from CIITS with Honorlock?
Yes. Contact [email protected] or call (936) 261-3283. Unfortunately we can not always answer Honorlock questions in real time and may not be able to get back to you immediately depending on other demands.
One of the reasons we choose Honorlock was due to their 24/7 support service.
Q. Does Honorlock prevent students from accessing other programs on their computer?
No. Because Honorlock is a browser based utility it can not prevent students from accessing other programs installed on the local machine. This is why it is critical to record the screen. Honorlock will flag an exam any time "Focus lost on proctoring window". The evidence the student accessed an unauthorized resource will be present in the recorded video.
Q. Can Honorlock restrict the websites students can access?
Yes. When setting up a test click on allow Website URL and list sites you want to permit access to.
Q. I need to send a student to the testing center to take an exam. Is there a way for the testing center proctor to bypass Honorlock?
Yes. A Pin may be assigned in limited circumstances. Contact [email protected] to request steps for how to setup a Bypass Pin.
Q. In reviewing the results it says Sceen share stopped. What does this mean?
This indicates that the student stopped the screen sharing during the exam manually. Google Chrome requires the ability to do this and it is native to all proctoring solutions.
This means the students screen is not recorded while screen sharing is stopped.
This is major red flag. Review the video to see how long the student was not sharing the screen. More than few moments strongly suggests a violation of academic integrity.

Screenshare stopped is different from "Test window lost focus". Test window lost focus may not be a cause for concern if students are allowed to visit other sites.
Q. What does the flag Test Window Lost Focus Indicate?
Test window lost focus means the student moved away from the exam window during the exam.
If other sites are permitted this may not indicate an issue.
If students attempt to access other programs on the computer during the exam, this could be an academic integrity concern.
Review the screen to make a determination.
Q. Can Honorlock be used with Hawkes, Mc-Graw-Hill, Pearson or Cengage Exams?
Yes. Many of these publishers have proctoring built in, but may require students to pay an additional fee to have more than the most basic service. There is a method to setup up 3rd party tests using Honorlock. Refer to Guide on Setting Up Honorlock in Hawkes. This process should work the same for all publishers.
- Notify students in your syllabus that Honorlock will be used and specify the hardware requirements. You can reference Honorlock Minimum Requirements Page. A sample statement is listed below.
- Have students test access to Honorlock BEFORE the first high stakes exam. Create a sample quiz with a single question for testing.
- This can be used as a prerequisite to allow access to future exams or for credit or extra credit.
- Optional participation is strongly discouraged.
- Provide our Troublehooting Guide to Students in Standard Instructions for every exam and in announcements about exams.
- Notify students of test behavior expectations.
- For most exams, permitting breaks is NOT recommended. Students can go to other websites during breaks and compromise the integrity of the exam.
- How do you handle situations when students stop sharing the screen?
Sample Syllabus Statement

Your exams will be recorded and only accessible to the instructor and a limited number of others who have a direct need in providing support.
Additional Clauses if using ID Verification or Room Scan
Additional clause if requiring ID verification - Strongly recommended for Online Classes.
Students must present a picture ID with their legal name during each exam. If your ID does not match your name in eCourses you will not be permitted to continue in the exam. Contact me at least a week before the first exam, if you have had a name change not reflected in eCourses.
Additional clause if requiring Room Scan - This feature will be difficult for students working on desktop computers
Students will be required to complete a 360 degree scan of their environment at the beginning of the exam. Ensure you have removed any items you wish not to be shared in the video or that are disallowed while taking the exam. Access to this recording will be limited to PVAMU employees with a direct need.
