Outcomes are used for assessment purposes and incorporated directly into Canvas through the Rubric tool. This system replaced Taskstream in 2022. This document covers using outcomes in assignments.
Overview Video
It is possible to use Outcomes in New Quizzes, refer to the Canvas Guide on Outcomes in New Quizzes. Classic Quizzes (the majority of faculty are using Classic Quizzes) does not support adding outcomes to specific questions.
Adding Outcomes
STEP 1: CREATE OR LOCATE RUBRIC
Rubrics can contain grading criteria only, outcomes only or a combination of both. Only 1 rubric can be assigned to any one assignment. Points can be omitted from Outcomes if desired.
- In any assignment click + Rubric at the bottom of the screen.
- If the desired Rubric has already been created, click on Find a Rubric to Import it.
- To create a new rubric click on Edit Pencils and add the Grading criteria as desired. Refer to the Canvas Guide on Rubric Creation for more details.
STEP 2: ADD OUTCOMES TO RUBRICS
- Outcomes can be added BEFORE a rubric is created or AFTER. To Add an Outocme click on Find Outcome Button.

- Outcomes are loaded into each Course by CIITS at the direction of Assessment Coordinators early each term, typically in Week 3.
- Outcomes can be copied from a prior course into a new shell.
Never add your own outcome for assessment purposes. When added to courses in this way they will not aggregate with other ratings from other classes. If the image below is displayed contact either your program assessment coordinator or CIITS at [email protected] for more information.

This screen shows Outcomes pre-loaded into a course.
- Click on the Category
- Click on Specific Outcome
- Uncheck Use this criterion for scoring (this is typcial. Only leave as is if the outcome score should be included in the final grade for the assignment. If the assignment only had outcomes and is not counted as a grade uncheck this value).
- Click Import

Until clicking Create Rubric - Outcomes will show point values in the rubric. Afterwards the points will be removed.

- Outcome -- Bullseye symbol always proceeds outcomes
Descriptive or "anchor" text is never included in outcomes. For grading descriptions contact your departmental assessment coordinator for additional information on how to rate based on each outcome.
